November 18 with Anselmo

$1800 for Outreach!

“The Anselmo Boles & Guests Benefit Show” at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Emmanuel Church was superb, in terms of performance and audience appreciation. Net proceeds came well to $1800, with Emmanuel Parish to issue the same amount to the stricken Macapayag Family.

With divas Linda Coz, Becky Espulgar, JanMac, & Joycee Dujale and our very own BobMac, Anselmo dazzled and enchanted an appreciative audience well into the night with contemporary jazz and pop renditions.

Anselmo was a standout in the Asian Entertainment circuit in the early 70s, performing with keyboard, piano, and voice, with a repertoire spanning all musical genres. From 1975-79, with his base in Chicago, he went on various US tours. From 1980-84, he moved his base to Palm Beach, playing in different restaurant-clubs frequented by the glitterati. Between 1986 and 1994, he took and broadened his repertoire to Las Vegas, and since 1997 up to the present, he has worked and entertained in Royal Caribbean International Cruises.

We would like to thank everyone who helped transform this show into a foot-stomping success!

Isn’t It Strange?

November 17, 2005

Isn’t it strange how a 20 dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?

Isn’t it strange how 2 hours seem so long when you’re at church, and how short they seem when you’re watching a good movie?

Isn’t it strange that you can’t find a word to say when you’re praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?

What is GK?

Less for self, more for others, enough for all!

Gawad Kalinga (GK) , translated in English means “to give care,” and it is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but the world. Its approach is integrated, holistic and sustainable – a concrete action plan to rebuild this nation by harnessing the best of the Filipino – our faith and our patriotism.

What started barely five years ago in the Philippines as a simple but daring initiative by Couples for Christ has now become a growing multi-sectoral partnership driven by a vision of a new Philippines with NO MORE SLUMS. Together with its partners, Gawad Kalinga is now in the process of transforming poverty-stricken areas, many of them now empowered to further improve their quality of life! And the heart-work of GK volunteers is evident in the beautiful colors of the GK homes that have been built for and with the poorest of the poor Filipino families nationwide.

Breakfast for Christians

“When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond?”

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me, what do you see?”

“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.
